I disagree with the advice to maintain good relations with the U.S., at least early on. Playing in SP, you should be able to beat the Yankee menace in the 1845 war. This is assuming you have defeated the Texans in 1836. You shouldn't even work up a sweat. The big problem that you will have with the Americans is in the post 1865 period, assuming the north has won the Civil War, when they will have a large army and a burning desire to get their hands on the western territories you snatched away in 1845. You should have a good set of allies in Latin America by that point. This probably makes swallowing up Central America a no-go, although it is satisfying to own the whole of New Spain. African colonization is something to think about, especially if you have fought the Spanish at some point and gotten your hands on their African possessions. In order to build a Latin American block to oppose the Americans, though, you have to avoid the badboy points.
