Background
Playing as Yugoslavia or any other minor nation in HOI 2 is much more fun than in original HOI for 2 major reasons: improved diplomacy and trading. With proper diplomatic influencing you can secure a safe future for Yugoslavia which means being an independent country with no threats from major powers. At the same time with proper resource trading and gradually improving industrial capacity, Yugoslavia can attack neighbouring countries to expand its territory as well as economic potential. Yugoslavia is great fun because you can create a major power from minor. Many great chalenges and fighting in Balkans agains low countries and maybe in future even fith USSR or Germany. Only drawback is tech team which are very poor. Hard but reward can be great; thats the chalenge, thats the fun right?
Tips
Here are some important points:
- DoW and annex Albania as soon as game begins. (Reader's note - this results in war with Italy)
- At the beginning of the game (1936) influence Italy as much as you can. They have claims on your territory but they won't attack you if relationship is +200
- Other than Italy, you need to influence Germany and UK.
- Attack and annex Bulgaria after Albania falls and you have relatively good relationships with major powers.
- Attack Hungary and Greece if they are not part of any alliance and your relationship with major powers are good.
- Leave Romania for the last one as they have respectable force.
- Trade resources for money with Germany. This way they will influence your neighbours less which means there is less chance that Germany will DoW you when you attack your neighbours.
- Remember to never waste IC and to improve your industry all the time.
Edit:
Remeber first to influence Italy to about +200 then DoW Albania. Otherwise Italy will for sure DoW you and you will be in great trouble. Maybe at first you will won some battles (I even got to middle of Italy - Rome was at my hands but then Italy gathered there forces and push me back) but they have two times large army and 1936 year units against yours 1918.
Axis or no Axis?
Entering the axis can be worthwhile, especially if you control Bulgaria and Albania. When you enter, you will receive the coup event. Ignore it and do not violate the pact of steel. Note that it'll get you a total of 20 dissent, or a DoW from Germany if you decide to break the pact.
Other option is to join the Comintern (The Allies are probably the worst choice, since they can't help you much). Joining the Comintern, SU might be able to help you by sending troops in your territory, plus you don't need to garrisson a SU border you might have, freeing most (if not all) of your forces to fight Germany. Do this if you want more of a challenge.
What’s Next?
The next move is to quell the partisans and once that is done you can take annex Greece. This can mean a quite formidable power in central Europe. After Greece, you can knock out Turkey, and can even make it to Baku when Germany starts losing in the east. Yugoslavia is a difficult country to play, but with a little finesse you can overpower all of the Mediterranean.
