As one of the South American Pagan nations, the Zapotec are in a poor starting position. Positioned in Southern Mexico they have only two routes of expansion - to invade the Aztecs and Maya territories. As neither side can build Forts it is necessary for the Zapotec to train as large an army as possible, and supplement this with mercenaries. Annexation is the best option against the Aztecs. If the war is successful then it should be followed up with a war against the Maya, which ends in either their annexation or vassalisation.

The Zapotec should then Westernise as soon as possible, and set about fortifying their territory with forts. As Zapotec infantry will most likely be outnumbered by European armies they can only hope to retake captured provinces after the attackers have moved on, increasing the enemy army's attrition.
