Description
After various excursions through Western Europe, $MONARCH$ is more determined than ever that extensive westernised reforms have to be implemented to fight the backwardness of our country. Skilled workers and scientists are being brought back to us in an effort to westernise the nation and make it more modern. The military is undergoing an extensive reorganisation and so are production and agricultural techniques.
Requirements
- Be in Eastern or Ottoman tech group
- Neighbour a Western tech country which is 20 tech levels ahead of you
- Stability of +3
- Have a ruler with administrative skills of 6 or more
- Centralization of -2 or less
- Innovative of -3 or less

Muslim to Eastern
Description
$MONARCH$ has become known not only as a great conqueror but also as a great consolidator and reformer. His competent rule has laid the foundation for the modernisation of our country. He is a great admirer of the advancement of the West and, with the help of foreign advisors, he has begun an extensive cultural and military reform.

- Have a ruler with administrative skills of 6 or more

Rest-of-the-World to Muslim
Description
Foreign explorers and settlers from all over Europe have progressively colonised an increasingly large part of our country. New diseases in combination with enslavement and exploitation have wiped out a large part of our population, shredding our cultural icons and values into pieces and promoting Western thoughts and ideas to replace them.
Requirements
- Be in the Sub-Saharan, New World, Indian, Chinese or Nomad tech group
- Be in Muslim tech group
- Neighbour a Western, Eastern or Muslim tech country which is 20 tech levels ahead of you
- Stability of +3
- Have a ruler with administrative skills of 6 or more
- Centralization of -2 or less
- Innovative of -3 or less
Effects
- Become Eastern tech group
- One province gains 1 base tax and ~150 manpower
- Innovative -1
- Stability -5
- Gain the western_influences modified until the end of the game giving
- Stability cost +50%
In Nomine
With In Nomine, westernisation is triggered as a national decision rather than an event.
Requirements
The requirements for the decision are:
- Belong to a non Latin tech group
- Have a neighbouring nation that belongs to the Latin tech group
- Stability of +3
- Have a ruler with administrative skills of 6 or more
- Centralization of -2 or less
- Innovative of -3 or less
Effects
The effects of the decision are:
- Moves the nation to the next better tech group, specifically
- Eastern tech group becomes Latin
- Muslim tech group becomes Eastern
- African, New World, Indian or Chinese tech group becomes Muslim
- Stability drops by -5
- The Innovative/Narrowminded domestic policy slider moves by one towards innovative (if possible)
- A random owned province gets +1 base tax and +1 manpower (if you are moving from Eastern tech group, you don't get the manpower bonus)
- The nation gets the effects of western influences for 200 months (16 years and 8 months). That has the following effects:
In other words, to convert, say, a nation that belongs to a new World tech group into one that belongs to a Latin tech group, you'll need to undergo 3 Westernisation decisions.
Napoleon's Ambition and EU3 vanilla
Westernization allows any nation outside of the advanced Latin technology group to move into that group. This is enormously beneficial for a nation's economy, military, and government. Eastern European and Muslim nations do not see the same dramatic gains from westernization as Asian, Africa, Indian, and New World nations. While Eastern and Muslim nations can be successful without Westernizing, it is generally one of the most important goals for any non-western nations to aim towards.
Varieties
Generally, the most challenging requirement to Westernize is to share a border with a Western nation and to have +100 relations with them. There are several events that allow Westernization in EU3 and NA:
- Waves of Influence: Modernization of any nation in the "eastern" technology group to Latin
- Western Influences: Modernization of any nation in the "muslim" technology group to Eastern
- Western Culture: Modernization of any nation in the New World, African, Indian or Asian tech group to Latin
Beginning in IN, only national decisions will allow westernisation.
Waves of Influence: Eastern to Latin
Absolute conditions:
- You must be at one of the three leftmost steps (-2 or less) on the Innovative vs. narrowminded domestic policies slider (i.e. highly innovative)
- You must have a Statesman advisor level 5 or 6
- You must have a ruler with administrative skill 7 or better
In addition to the above, the following speeds up the process:
- The further towards innovative, the better
- The higher advisor level, the better
- The higher ruler administrative skill, the better
- Being centralised helps (the three leftmost steps on the centralization vs. decentralization domestic policies slider)
- Having a Latin tech country as your neighbour
- Having a Naval or Army Reformer advisor
Western Influences: Muslim to Eastern
Absolute conditions:
- You must be at one of the three leftmost steps on the Innovative vs. narrowminded domestic policies slider (i.e. highly innovative)
- You must have a ruler with administrative and military skill 6 or better
In addition to the above, the following speeds up the process:
- The further towards innovative, the better
- Having a Statesman advisor, preferrably level 5 or 6
- Having an Army Reformer advisor level 5 or 6
- Having a eastern or Latin tech country as your neighbour
Western Culture: African or New World to Latin
Absolute conditions:
- You must have a ruler with administrative skill 6 or better
- Your state religion must belong to the Christian group
- You must have a Latin tech country as your neighbour
In addition to the above, the following speeds up the process:
- As high as possible ruler's administrative and military skill
- Having a Statesman advisor
- Having a Eastern or Latin tech country as your neighbour
- Being innovative helps (the three leftmost steps on the innovative vs, narrowminded domestic policies slider)
Effects
- The nation becomes a member of a better tech group, meaning the cost of technology drops tremendously
- A nation will begin getting a neighbor bonus for any technologies where it lags behind
- Within a few months the nation will be able to explore all of Europe.
- In EU3 only, westernization meant nations would get Latin military units as well
Disadvantages
- Westernization causes a one-time -5 stability loss
- High innovation requirements result in losing missionaries and slow colonial growth
