Talk:Research cost
From EU3 Wiki
I got the 90 province max from a post I saw on the forum, I haven't actually verified it myself. I my game where I was doing the testing I had about 160 provinces and adding a few more did not affect my research costs, so there seems to be a max I just don't know for sure if it's 90 or not. Also, I haven't come up with an equation for the early research penalty since data I have from an older game doesn't match my current game data in this regard. - Mustard 01:41, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- Further testing seems to indicate the maximum is 100 provinces (at least that gives a nice round number for cost per province per year of 5). Mustard 16:28, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for some hard numbers on that topic. Now we know not to take anything that earns less than 5 ducats. --Delra 17:42, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- Note that the cost is per tech so if you want to research all 5 techs equally you'd need 25 ducat per province. Mustard
Formula for the early research penalty (n = penalty years): Research_Cost = Base_Research_Cost * ( 1 + n^2 / 20 ); or %_of_penalty = + 5 * n^2 %; For example: 6 year research penalty => + 5 * 6*6 = + 180%, and: 5 year research penalty => + 5 * 5*5 = + 125% (delay conclusion of research from DEC to FEB = savings); Sorry, but I not speak english well -- Chamangato 9:35, 6 March 2007 (GTM+1)
- Thanks for the formula, I had given up trying to figure it out myself. :-) Mustard 01:35, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
If you analyze research cost for small (1-2 provinces) countries in the beginning of the game (version 1.1) you'll see that number of provinces dependency in research cost formula is incorrect. Instead of 5*n it should be 125*f(n) where n – number of owned provinces, and f(n) - some kind of logarithmic function: f(1) = 1; f(2) = 1.2; f(13) = 2.1… and probably f(100) = 4
Research cost also depends on inflation, tech group and luck, so it is: Base_Research_Cost = 125 ducats * f(number of provinces) * (expected historical time) years * sliders_and_national_idea_modifier * inflation_modifier * tech_group_modifier * luck_modifier * defender_of_faith_modifier --Ashf72 04:54, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- My initial research was all done with a very large nation. I've gone back and loaded several smaller nations and I agree with you that the cost per province is clearly not linear as I had initially assumed. It appears that the maximum base cost per year is 500 (assuming no penalties) and I therefore assumed that was based on a maximum of 100 provinces at 5 ducat/province. However your numbers imply that the maximum of 500 would be reach at the 89th province (which more closely matches the 90 province max I saw mentioned on the forum once). I would assume that the province function would be similar to the early research penalty function (in having a fixed equation), but that doesn't seem to match up with the data you posted, so it may just be based on some lookup table Paradox created.
