Questions. First, why not go south towards Ethiopia? You can see them but they can't see you early on. Your only real threat from any direction if you play the diplomatic game even reasonably well is Qara Koyunlu, but even they have problems with the Timurids. Secondly, I don't like the idea of Defender of the Faith for Mamluks in particular because the countries you'd get a CB on with it aren't directly connected to you and so take far more time to actually get to than I think wise.
