Heir To The Throne

Starting Monarch

Note: this guide assumes a 1399 start

Pommerania's starting monarch is part of the Gryf Dynasty, the same dynasty as Denmark (and, since they are in a personal union, Sweden and Norway.

Overview

Pommerania has great potential for expansion either south or westward, as its provinces form much of what Prussia starts with later in the game. Having two provinces gives it a crucial edge over other one province minors and is initially part of the Hanseatic League, allowing for a trade strategy as well, while not being so large as to be costly in maintaining stability.

Diplomacy

Early game, Pommerania will be given a variety of diplomatic choices at random. Sometimes, it may result in a lucky alliance with a regional power. Othertimes, it may end in an unfortunate early war with Brandenburg that is hard to overcome. It is preferable to have an alliance with a larger nation along with one of your bordering nations. Try to keep out of any major wars until Pommerania has the capability to field a larger army. Allying with the Teutonic League is an option, at the cost of being able to expand into their land.

Trade and Colonization

One strategy is to focus on trading, starting at Lubeck, and eventually branching out into North America or other colonial areas due to the low costs of technology for small countries. After colonizing North America, there should be sufficient funds for more pursuits in Europe.

Subterfuge and Rebellions

As with other countries in the Holy Roman Empire, Pommerania is in a excellent position to use spies to expand outward. As one province minors lack the money to maintain a large army, and there are many in the HRE, successfully launching a patriot uprising in a two province minor (most likely to contain a minority culture and unable to completely defeat the stack) will often lead to provinces defecting into Pommerania due to how the rebellion system works. Forged documents are no longer as useful in HTTT as in previous versions as cores are no longer provided. It is not recommended unless used to force a personal union and later inheritance, which is a costly endeavor best saved for late game. Do not switch country tags to Prussia, Germany, or HRE when there are active revolts loyal to Pommerania as rebel loyalties do not carry over.

Military Expansion

Pommerania has a variety of early missions that grants cores on neighboring territories. It is not advisable to do so if neighboring countries are allies to major powers however. The Teutonic Order usually is a good choice for a target due to the various cultures present in the country that can supported in a revolt during war, and the possibility of a free core from missions. If early expansion via force is chosen, Pommerania's low manpower limit can be overcome via mercenaries and minting (inflation can be overcome later). During war, rush to their capital while supporting a revolt or two in their most populated province (generally, the larger the populace the larger the rebel size will be). When fighting against larger opponents, peace out quickly for one or two provinces before they are able to start a war of attrition.

If a one province minor declares war, ignore them unless they directly border you. Focus on bringing your spy and trade capacity up to supplement your war machine. Taking advantage of War Exhaustion and Patriotic uprisings (via perhaps "exploit" like tactics) can lead to a quick expansion of your nation and quadrupling of your manpower limit.

Prussia

Forming Prussia is not difficult as Pommerania and brings a whopping +25% military advantage, and is highly recommended.

Germany

It is much easier to be able to form Germany as Pomerania via military, diplomatic, and espionage means than forming the Holy Roman Empire. However, the rewards are less than unifying the HRE as not many new cores are acquired as via HRE unification. It is not possible to form both Germany and HRE.

Holy Roman Emperor

It is inadvisable for Pommerania to become entangled with defending other nations early on. However, good Imperial Authority is hard to come by (for the AI at least) via methods apart from inheritance, so try to keep it up whenever possible in hopes that one or two early reforms can be achieved by the time Pommerania holds the crown. Bohemia, the starting emperor, is relatively weak compared to other possibilities (in fact, with just half of the Teutonic Order annexed, Pommerania can easily defeat Bohemia with judicious use of rebels). This is both a blessing and a curse, as Bohemia can not withstand joint wars with France, Poland, and Lithuania as other candidates for emperor might, which is not a rare occurrence.

Later, once Pommerania has the wealth or size of an empire, becoming HRE should be relatively easy with the vassalage of the electors.

Expansion Abroad

There are two easy but questionable ways to expand the kingdom/republic/theocracy of Pommerania. Supporting revolution on the Irish Isles when England is at war will lead to five new provinces as the rebel stack can overpower any of the one province Irish minors. There is another province similar to this in the Crimea which results in an incredibly large 20 regiment revolt (owned by Genoa). A single spy can lead to more than twenty new provinces as the "nationalism" in these newly acquired provinces lead to Patriot type rebels who remain loyal to the last country to fund rebels in the area (not hard as the AI does not do this often).
