Lucky Nations is an option that gives bonuses to 8 AI-controlled countries. This is designed to stimulate the appearance of "Major Powers" in every game. There are three settings for lucky nations when a new game is started: Historical, Random and None. If you choose to play with lucky nations, the 8 selected countries will receive a number of bonuses listed below.

Bonuses
A lucky country gets the following bonuses (from static_modifiers.txt, version 3.2b):
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Merchant Compete Chance | 0.1 |
| Colonist Placement Chance | 0.1 |
| Missionary Placement Chance | 0.3 |
| Government Tech Cost Modifier | -0.02 |
| Land Tech Cost Modifier | -0.02 |
| Naval Tech Cost Modifier | -0.02 |
| Production Tech Cost Modifier | -0.02 |
| Trade Tech Cost Modifier | -0.02 |
| Stability Cost Modifier | -0.50 |
| Leader Fire | 1 |
| Leader Shock | 1 |
| Spy Efficiency | 0.05 |
When a lucky country is destroyed, the game assigns another country to become lucky, so there will always be 8 lucky countries as long as enough countries remain.
Eligible countries
Historical lucky nations are chosen from a list that changes slightly over time. If none of the countries exists, a random nation will be chosen.
- Spain / Castile (before 1700)
- Muscovy / Russia
- Ottoman Empire
- Great Britain / England
- France
- Austria
- Prussia (if they have 7 or more provinces)
- Netherlands (if they have 7 or more provinces)
- Portugal (before 1700)
- Sweden (before 1750)
Starting at 1399 will always have Castile, Muscovy, Ottoman Empire, England, France, Austria, Portugal and Sweden as lucky nations.
Random lucky nations are semi-random, and skewed towards larger nations. The most often occurring nations are (in sorted order)
- Byzantine Empire
- France
- Burgundy
- Castile
- Lithuania
- Mamluks
- Teutonic Order
- Hungary
- Austria
- Milan
- Timurid Empire
- Bohemia
- England
- Sweden
- Ottoman Empire
- Aragon
- ...
- ...
The Byzantine empire stands out and is chosen about 80% of the times
Changing the default setting
EU3 will constantly turn lucky nations back on. In order to stop this, another (14th) digit must be added to gameplaysettings.txt like this:
gameplaysettings={
setgameplayoptions={
0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 1 1 0 2 }
}
0 for historical, 1 for random, and 2 for none.
